International
conference-exhibition:
"Towards safer and cleaner seas"

Brest, France,
11-16 March 2002
Risk
taking is most probably one of the least ignored aspects
of the maritime world. Today, the risks are different, particularly
as regards the transport of hazardous and polluting substances.
Protecting the ship against the sea is not enough any more:
it has become necessary to protect the sea and coastline
against ship pollution.
In this context, the Brest Urban Community, in collaboration
with all involved bodies and organizations, organised a
week dedicated to maritime safety and the protection of
the marine environment, with the aim of taking a scientific,
technical and legal in-depth look at the improvements achieved
and remaining problems to provide decision makers with criteria
of estimation, scientists with themes for co-operative research
and industrialists with orientations for new developments.
This
manifestation was composed of 3 seminars and 1 exhibition:
- Maritime safety and environnental protection: evolution
and perspectives
- 3rd International Maritime Organization research and development
forum
- European seminar "Technical lessons learnt from the
Erika incident and other oil spills"
- Exhibition "Interspill 2002".
The seminars drew 670 participants from 82 countries. An
additional 200 visitors joined them around the 47 booths
of the exhibition, representing 150 exibitors from 13 countries.
The proceedings of the conferences "Lessons from the
Erika" are proposed for sale on CD-Rom. Please refer
to "Lessons from the Erika (CD-Rom)" page for
