On 26 May 1974, the Norwegian bulk carrier the Sygna was was waiting in Newcastle harbour to load a cargo of coal for Europe. A heavy storm drove her aground on Stockton Beach. The stern of the vessel split and she lost 500 tonnes of bunker in the incident. The wreck was declared a total loss and left on site. Eventually, the bow was refloated and towed to Taïwan where it was scrapped.
