On
19 September 1966, the tanker the Seestern suffered from damage
due to a pumping error. This incident resulted in the loss of 1,700 tonnes
of Nigerian light crude oil.
This
pollution had a serious impact on the coast. 320 km of salt marshes
were damaged. The fauna also suffered, as 5,000 birds were
found dead.
