On 8 August
1990, two vessels collided with each other off Gibraltar: the Norwegian
liquified gas tanker the Hesperus and the Cypriot oil tanker the
Sea Spirit.
The latter’s hull was torn and spilled 8,000 tonnes
of oil which had been loaded in the United States. Pollution reached
the Moroccan coasts in the form of oil packs, cakes and tar balls.
