On 8 August 1990, two vessels collided with each other off Gibraltar: the Norwegian liquified gas tanker the Hesperus and the Cypriot oil tanker the Sea Spirit.

The latter’s hull was torn and spilled 8,000 tonnes of oil which had been loaded in the United States. Pollution reached the Moroccan coasts in the form of oil packs, cakes and tar balls.
