On 19 November 1997, the Green Lily was leaving the Shetlands and heading towards the Ivory Coast in stormy weather when a technical problem occurred in the engine room. A seawater supply line was broken. It was impossible to restart the engine. The coastguards were contacted. They immediately sent a helicopter, a lifeboat and 3 tugs on site. The crew were rescued with difficulty because of the vessel movement. The Green Lily’s starboard anchor was dropped to keep the vessel from drifting ashore. However she eventually ran aground and broke up, releasing some 340 tonnes of fuel and diesel.
