On 5 November 1973, the oil tanker Golar Patricia broke in two following three violent explosions and sank 130 miles off the Canary Islands.
One of the 43 crew members was killed in the accident and 10,000 tonnes of bunker fuel leaked out of the tanks and into the sea.
