On 8 April 1970, the tanker Efthycosta was involved in a collision with the Esso Ipswich off Lavernock Point. She lost 700 tonnes of heavy fuel in the incident.
Half of the oil spilled was recovered with the use of 14 tonnes of dispersants.
16 km of coastline was polluted. The biological effects reported were low.
