In 1998, sachets of anti-vermin product were deliberately dumped at sea by the bulk carrier Ban-Ann off the Dutch coast. This product contains sulphur-phosphine which reacts to humidity by generating a toxic gas. Sachets grounded on the shoreline were recovered and destroyed.
