The Athos 1 was approaching the unloading terminal when she hit
part of an unindicated metal pipe. She lost approximately 1,000
tonnes of highly viscous crude oil, with a greater density than
water, which was to be delivered to an asphalt refinery.
More than 200 km of coastline were polluted in the states of Pennsylvania,
New Jersey and Delaware. Response teams deployed more than 30 km
of booms. Two sectors of a nuclear plant were temporarily closed.
Significant environmental and economic damage resulted from this
accident.
